    Discover more about Venetian Loggia

Located in the heart of Heraklion, the Venetian Loggia stands as a proud reminder of the island's Venetian past. Constructed between 1626 and 1628 by Francesco Morosini, it was designed as a gathering place for Venetian nobles to discuss political, economic, and social issues. The Loggia is considered one of the most elegant Venetian structures in Crete, reflecting the architectural style of Andrea Palladio's Basilica in Vicenza.Throughout its history, the Loggia has undergone several transformations. After the Ottoman conquest in 1669, it lost its Venetian character and was used as the Crete Treasury. Following Crete's independence in 1898, the building was repurposed as the Town Hall of Heraklion. Restoration efforts began in 1915 and were completed after World War II, earning the Loggia the Europa Nostra award in 1987 for its successful renovation.Today, visitors can admire the Loggia's architecture, featuring Doric columns on the ground floor and Ionic columns on the first floor. Although the interior is not generally accessible, the exterior provides a picturesque backdrop to the city center. The Loggia is conveniently located near other landmarks such as the Morosini Lions Fountain and Agios Titos Church, making it a central point for exploring Heraklion.
