Discover more about Old Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus

The Old Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios, situated on the slopes of Mount Olympus at an altitude of 850 meters, is a significant religious site in the Pieria region of Greece. Founded in 1542 by Saint Dionysios, the monastery was originally dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Over time, it became known by the name of its founder, a monk who dedicated his life to God. Encircled by strong, high walls and a prominent watchtower, the monastery resembles a small fortress. Throughout its history, it served as a shelter for civilians and fighting troops during various conflicts. The monastery played an active role in the Olympus Revolt in 1878, providing refuge for women and children. It also functioned as a spiritual center with a rich collection of books and a manuscript-copying workshop. The monastery faced numerous destructions and rebuilds throughout its history. In 1821, it was set ablaze by Veli Pasha, and in April 1943, it was bombed and nearly demolished by the German Wehrmacht to prevent its use as a refuge for Greek resistance fighters. Despite the attacks, the monastery continued to protect the residents of Olympus. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the old monastery and witness its rare architectural wonder integrated within the Enipeas ravine. A twenty-minute walk from the monastery leads to the Holy Cave, where Saint Dionysios practiced asceticism. The cave, with its natural spring, attracts many visitors who come to witness and taste the holy water. Although the monastery is undergoing restoration, it remains open to the public from sunrise to sunset, offering a peaceful and spiritual experience.
