Discover more about Miltiadis Bastion, Palamidi fortress

Miltiadis Bastion, situated within the imposing Palamidi Fortress, stands as a testament to the site's rich and often turbulent history. The fortress itself, perched atop a 216-meter hill overlooking Nafplio and the Argolic Gulf, was constructed by the Venetians between 1711 and 1714 during their second occupation of the area. However, before it was even completed, it fell to the Ottoman Turks. The bastion is named in honor of Miltiades the Younger, a prominent Athenian general known for his role in the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. After the Greeks regained control of the fortress, the bastions, originally bearing Venetian and then Turkish names, were renamed to honor Greek heroes. Miltiadis Bastion later served as a prison from 1840 to 1926. Theodoros Kolokotronis, a hero of the Greek War of Independence, was imprisoned here in 1833 on charges of high treason. Today, visitors can explore the historic cells and wander through the bastion, taking in the panoramic views. The bastion offers a unique perspective on the fortress's strategic design and its role in the region's history.
