Discover more about Theodoros Kolokotronis Statue

The Theodoros Kolokotronis Statue stands as a proud monument in Nafplio, Greece, commemorating the life and achievements of Theodoros Kolokotronis (1770-1843), a general and a pre-eminent leader of the Greek War of Independence. This equestrian statue, created by sculptor Lazaros Sochos, is one of the most important works of neo-Hellenic sculpture and the first equestrian statue in the modern Greek state. The statue is located in Kolokotronis Park, a green oasis in the heart of Nafplio. Kolokotronis is depicted on horseback, looking stern and upright, as if heading towards the battlefield. He is armed and wears the traditional clothing of fighters of that era. The horse is in a strong, galloping stance, and Kolokotronis's head is turned to the left, urging the Greeks to fight. His outstretched right hand indicates the Greeks' goal of fighting for their freedom, enhancing the sculpture's dynamism and emphasizing Kolokotronis's leadership. The statue was erected to honor Kolokotronis's role in the Greek Revolution, particularly his leadership in major military operations such as the siege of Tripolitsa and the defeat of Dramalis at Dervenakia. The statue was crafted in 1895, and after a nationwide fundraising campaign, it was installed in 1901. The statue is positioned so that Kolokotronis points towards Dervenakia, commemorating the victory there. A similar statue by Sochos can be found in Athens.
