Discover more about The Ancient Olive Grove (Elaionas)

The Ancient Olive Grove, or Elaionas, on Aegina Island, is a captivating sanctuary where time seems to stand still. Located approximately 8 kilometers south of Aegina's main port, near Pachia Rachi, this hidden gem is a testament to the island's enduring connection to nature and history. The grove is nestled at the foothills of Mount Ellanion, an extinct volcano, adding to the dramatic beauty of the landscape. As you wander through the valley, you'll encounter olive trees that have thrived for centuries, with some estimated to be between 1,500 and 2,000 years old. These ancient trees are living sculptures, their gnarled trunks and deeply grooved bark telling silent stories of the past. Some of the largest trees measure an astounding 13 meters in circumference, with internal cavities large enough to offer views of the trees beyond. The grove is not only a visual spectacle but also a haven for local fauna. Keep an eye out for wild rabbits, partridges, tortoises, and grazing livestock as you explore the area. Three whitewashed chapels—Agios Georgios, Agia Kyriaki, and Agia Triada—add to the serene and sacred atmosphere of the grove. The grove's untouched nature is due to its distance from the sea, with waters flowing from the heights finding their way to Marathon Bay. The French fashion house Hermes chose this unique location for a photoshoot in 2005. Visiting the Ancient Olive Grove offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and the distant past. The tranquility and special energy of the landscape provide a rewarding experience for those seeking a peaceful escape.
