    Discover more about Akrotiri Lighthouse

The Akrotiri Lighthouse, a beacon of Santorini's maritime history, stands proudly on the island's southwestern coast. Constructed in 1892 by a French company, it is among the first lighthouses built in Greece. For over a century, it has guided ships through the Aegean Sea, its light a reassuring presence for sailors navigating the Cyclades. The lighthouse only ceased operation during World War II, but was recommissioned by the Greek Navy in 1945. The lighthouse itself is a simple yet striking structure, with a square white tower rising from the former keeper's house. Though the lighthouse is automated today, it still emits a bright white light every 10 seconds, visible for up to 24 nautical miles. Visitors flock to the Akrotiri Lighthouse for its breathtaking views. From its clifftop setting, one can see the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and neighboring islands. It's a particularly popular spot to watch the sunset, offering a less crowded alternative to Oia. The surrounding area also offers opportunities to explore, with the ancient Akrotiri ruins and Red Beach nearby.
