Kritinia Castle: A Window to Rhodes' Past

Perched atop a 131-meter-high hill near Kritinia village, Kritinia Castle (Kastellos) offers visitors a glimpse into Rhodes' medieval past and stunning vistas of the surrounding Aegean Sea. Constructed in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John, the castle served as a vital defensive point against pirates and Ottoman fleets. The Knights quickly restored it, but today, only the outer walls and some interior remnants remain.Visitors can still see the coats of arms of Grand Masters Origny and D'Amboise above the entrance. Within the walls are the relics of a chapel dedicated to St. John, adorned with 16th-century wall paintings. The Greek Archeological Services are undertaking a reinforcement program to conserve the damaged sections of the castle and church.Kritinia village itself, meaning "New Crete," was founded by Cretan refugees seeking shelter on Rhodes.
