Kritinia Castle: A Window to Rhodes' Past

Perched atop a 131-meter-high hill near Kritinia village, Kritinia Castle (Kastellos) offers visitors a glimpse into Rhodes' medieval past and stunning vistas of the surrounding Aegean Sea. Constructed in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John, the castle served as a vital defensive point against pirates and Ottoman fleets. Its strategic location allowed for comprehensive monitoring of the sea, safeguarding the island's western coast. Originally, the castle was divided into three levels, each belonging to a different Grand Master. The design blends Byzantine and Venetian architectural styles, reflecting the diverse influences on Rhodes throughout its history. In 1480, the castle withstood a major Ottoman attack, though it suffered significant damage. The Knights quickly restored it, but today, only the outer walls and some interior remnants remain. Visitors can still see the coats of arms of Grand Masters Origny and D'Amboise above the entrance. Within the walls are the relics of a chapel dedicated to St. John, adorned with 16th-century wall paintings. The Greek Archeological Services are undertaking a reinforcement program to conserve the damaged sections of the castle and church. Kritinia village itself, meaning "New Crete," was founded by Cretan refugees seeking shelter on Rhodes. The village offers traditional cafes and tavernas with scenic views. The nearby harbor of Kamiros Skala provides ferry connections to Chalki island.
