Overview
Rising above the modern village of Lindos, the Acropolis stands as a powerful reminder of Rhodes' rich and varied past. This natural citadel has been fortified by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, the Knights of St. John, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on this strategic location. The Acropolis's history stretches back to the 10th century BC when the Dorians first settled the area. The Temple of Athena Lindia, dating back to around 300 BC, dominates the site, though its origins trace back to the 6th century BC. Over the centuries, the Acropolis served as a religious center, a military stronghold, and a symbol of power.Visitors can explore the ruins of the Temple of Athena Lindia, the Hellenistic stoa, a Byzantine church, and the fortifications built by the Knights Hospitaller. Carved into the rock face is an ancient trireme (warship), believed to be a votive offering to Athena Lindia. The panoramic views from the Acropolis are simply breathtaking, encompassing the village, coastline, and the azure waters of the Mediterranean. While the Acropolis has undergone restoration efforts, including those during the Italian occupation (1912-1945), the site continues to reveal its layered history through ongoing archaeological work. Today, the Acropolis of Lindos is one of the most popular archaeological sites in Greece, drawing visitors from around the globe.
