Discover more about Fouha Rock | Fu'una and Puntan

Fouha Rock, a designated National Natural Landmark since 1972, stands as a powerful symbol of Chamorro creation mythology. According to legend, Fu'una and Puntan, brother and sister deities, sacrificed themselves to create the universe. Puntan's body was divided, with his back becoming the earth, his chest the sky, one eye the sun, and the other the moon; his eyebrows formed the rainbows. Fu'una then used her power to bring Puntan's creations to life, making the earth bloom. In her final act, she threw herself into the earth, transforming into Fouha Rock, from which the first humans emerged. The ancient Chamorro people believed the rock held mystical healing powers, and it remains a sacred site where visitors often leave offerings. The 150-foot rock formation is located on the north point of Fouha Bay, offering picturesque views and a tranquil atmosphere. A visit involves an easy hike through grassy hills and clusters of coconut and banana trees, leading down to the secluded bay. While the hike is generally easy, the return trip involves an uphill climb, and appropriate footwear is recommended due to sharp limestone, coral, and rocks along the bay.
