Discover more about Fouha Rock | Fu'una and Puntan

Fouha Rock, a designated National Natural Landmark since 1972, is more than just a striking rock formation; it's a cornerstone of Chamorro creation mythology. Located near Humåtak Bay in southern Guam, this 150-foot limestone pillar is known as the resting place of Fu'una, the Chamorro goddess who, with her brother Puntan, created the world and its people. According to legend, Puntan instructed his sister Fu'una to use his body to create the universe. She made the land, sky, sun, moon, and rainbows from his remains, then transformed herself into Fouha Rock, from which the first humans emerged. The ancient Chamorro people believed the rock held mystical healing powers and made pilgrimages to pay homage to Fu'una. Visiting Fouha Rock involves an easy hike through grassy hills and clusters of coconut and banana trees, leading to a picturesque bay. The trail begins near the Guam Power Authority substation WBP-2, just north of Umatac Bay. While the hike is relatively easy, the return trip involves an uphill climb, and the shoreline has sharp limestone, coral, and rocks, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Today, Fouha Rock remains a significant part of Chamorro culture, with many still honoring the traditions and values associated with the legend through pilgrimage, song, dance, and offerings. The site is thought to be the location for the largest gatherings of Chamorros before Spanish colonization.
