Discover more about Guam Gold Star Families Memorial

The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, located in the heart of Hagåtña's Skinner Plaza, is a poignant tribute to the servicemen and women from Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States. The memorial also provides support for the families who have lost loved ones in combat. The monument was unveiled on Guam's 78th Liberation Day and stands as the first of its kind in a U.S. territory. It was created by the Woody Williams Foundation, named after Hershel “Woody” Williams, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient who was instrumental in the liberation of Guam. Williams dedicated his life to recognizing Gold Star Families. The memorial is constructed from black granite and features two sides. One side is inscribed with the words: “Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom”. The other side tells a story through four granite panels representing Homeland, Family, Patriot, and Sacrifice. A silhouette of a saluting service member stands at the center, symbolizing the legacy of those who paid the ultimate price. The monument serves as a place for Gold Star Families to gather, remember, and honor their loved ones.
