Getting There

  • Driving

    From the village of Inarajan, drive north on Route 4. Look for a small sign on the right that indicates 'Gadao's Cave'. Turn right onto the narrow road and follow it to the trailhead. The cave is a short hike from the road. There is no parking fee.

  • Public Transport

    From Fonte Plateau, take the bus route that goes south towards Inalåhan. Check the local bus schedule for times. Get off at the stop nearest to Route 4. Walk about 0.5 miles along Route 4 towards Gadao's Cave. Look for the sign indicating the entrance to Gadao's Cave. Be cautious while walking, as there may not be sidewalks. Bus fare is $1.00 per ride.

Gadao's Cave, also known as Liyang Gadao, is a significant rock art site near Inalåhan, Guam. The cave is named after Chief Gadao, a legendary figure in Chamorro folklore. The cave, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974, is a must-see for those interested in Guam's history and culture. The cave features approximately 50 Chamorro pictographs, painted using a mixture of coral lime and tree sap. These images, believed to be as old as 800 CE, depict human-like and animal-like forms, with the most famous pictograph showing two men, one carrying what appears to be a coconut. It is thought that the drawings represent Chief Gadao challenging Chief Malaguaña in a test of strength. The cave itself is relatively small, measuring about three meters wide, two meters high, and six meters deep. The interior has a vertical drop leading to a chamber filled with cultural artifacts. The surrounding area offers lush greenery and opportunities for hiking and exploring Guam's diverse flora and fauna.
