Mount Lamlam Summit: Guam's Highest Peak

Mount Lamlam, meaning "lightning" in the Chamorro language, is the highest peak on the island of Guam, rising 406 meters (1,332 feet) above sea level. While modest in height compared to other mountains, it holds a unique distinction: measured from its base in the nearby Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean, Mount Lamlam represents one of the greatest changes in elevation over a short distance on Earth.The hike to the summit is a rewarding experience, with trails winding through lush tropical vegetation. The well-worn path is easy to follow and the summit of Mount Lamlam can be reached in about an hour. On a clear day, it is possible to see the entirety of Guam, nearby Cocos Island, and even the distant Northern Mariana Islands.Mount Lamlam is also a site of cultural and spiritual significance to the Chamorro people, the indigenous inhabitants of Guam. The mountain is considered a sacred place where the physical and spiritual worlds meet. Every year, local Catholics participate in an Easter pilgrimage, carrying crosses to the nearby Mount Jumullong Manglo in a reenactment of the Stations of the Cross.Visitors should wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and start their hike early to avoid the midday heat. The trail can be rocky and uneven in places, and the upper reaches of the mountain can be windy.
