Discover more about Agat Unit | Ga'an Point

Agat Unit | Ga'an Point, located on the southern coast of Guam, is a captivating national park that combines stunning coastal landscapes with a rich historical background. This natural oasis is renowned for its turquoise waters meeting lush greenery, creating a picturesque backdrop for visitors. As part of the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, Ga'an Point holds significant historical importance, having played a crucial role during World War II. On July 21, 1944, it was the site of the southern landing during the Battle of Guam, where U.S. forces aimed to reclaim the island from Japanese occupation. The area was heavily fortified by the Japanese, and the remains of these fortifications, including pillboxes and gun emplacements, can still be seen today. Visitors can explore well-preserved World War II-era Japanese fortifications and two Japanese guns relocated to Ga'an Point after the war. The most significant fortification is the cluster of concealed pillboxes built into the rocky outcropping. These bunkers were so well camouflaged that American intelligence missed them before the invasion. The park also features a memorial where the flags of the United States, Japan, and Guam fly in memory of everyone who died during the conflict on Guam. Today, Ga'an Point offers a place for reflection and learning, with historical markers and artifacts that speak to the island's strategic importance during the war. Visitors can stroll along trails, enjoy panoramic ocean views, and observe diverse flora and fauna. The shallow, rocky beach with seagrass beds offshore is accessible from the parking area, leading past restrooms to the historic Japanese guns and fortifications.
