Discover more about Parque Central de Antigua Guatemala

Parque Central, or Central Park, is more than just a green space; it's the historical and social nucleus of Antigua Guatemala. Founded in 1543, the park, originally a market square, evolved into a place for cultural and political exchange, public announcements, and even executions. Today, Parque Central is a vibrant meeting point where locals and tourists converge. The square is framed by significant colonial structures: City Hall to the north, the Palace of the Captains General to the south, and the San José Cathedral to the east. These buildings stand as testaments to Antigua's enduring history, having survived numerous earthquakes and other calamities. The centerpiece of the park is the Fuente de las Sirenas (Fountain of the Sirens), a beautiful fountain designed by architect Diego de Porres in 1738 and reconstructed in 1936. Inspired by the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna, Italy, it features four mermaids spouting water. The park's garden-like setting, a transformation from the 20th century, provides a tranquil environment for relaxation and people-watching. Visitors can often find street performers, local musicians, and vendors selling traditional textiles and snacks, adding to the park's lively atmosphere. Parque Central has also served as a stage for significant historical events, from Spanish colonial rule to Guatemala's independence in 1821. Even now, the park remains a focal point for cultural events, protests, and daily life in Antigua.
