If you are traveling by car, start by heading south from Reykjavík on Route 1 (the Ring Road). After about 100 km, take a left onto Route 249 towards Þórsmörk. Follow Route 249 until you reach the Þórsmörk parking area. Note that Route 249 can be rough and is best driven with a 4x4 vehicle. The parking fee is approximately ISK 1,500 per vehicle.
Public Transport
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavík to Hvolsvöllur. From Hvolsvöllur, you can catch a bus operated by a local company directly to Þórsmörk. The bus service is typically available during the summer months, and the fare is around ISK 3,500. Make sure to check the bus schedules in advance to ensure you align your trip properly as there are limited services available.
Hiking
If you're already in the Highlands and prefer a more adventurous route, you can hike to Þórsmörk from various nearby trails. One popular option is to start from the nearby hut at Landmannalaugar. The hike is approximately 60 km and typically takes 2-3 days, with stunning views along the way. Be sure to prepare adequately with camping gear and food supplies.
