If you are driving from the center of the Myvatn region, head southeast on Route 1 (the Ring Road) towards Akureyri. After approximately 12 kilometers, take the exit toward Route 848 (Skútustaðir). Continue on Route 848 for about 3 kilometers until you reach Skútustaðagígar. You will see signs directing you to the crater area, which is well-marked.

To reach Skútustaðagígar via public transportation, you will need to take a bus from Reykjahlíð, which is the nearest town. Several bus services operate between Reykjahlíð and Akureyri, with transfers available. Depending on the bus schedule, you may need to take a bus to Akureyri and then catch a bus heading back towards Myvatn, specifically asking the driver to let you off at the Skútustaðir stop. From there, it's about a 10-15 minute walk to the craters.

For those feeling adventurous, biking from Reykjahlíð is an option. The route follows the scenic path along the lake Myvatn. The distance is approximately 10 kilometers.
