Car
From the main parking area in Skaftafell National Park, take the Ring Road (Route 1) heading east. Continue for approximately 33 kilometers until you reach the junction for Route 998. Turn right onto Route 998 and follow the signs for Fossálar Waterfall. After about 5 kilometers, you'll find a small parking area. Be sure to park your vehicle here, as the trail to the waterfall begins nearby. The walk from the parking area to the Fossálar Waterfall takes about 30 minutes along a well-marked path.
Public Transportation
If you're relying on public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik or nearby towns that service Skaftafell National Park. Upon arrival at the Skaftafell bus stop, head to the main visitor center. From there, you can either join a guided tour that includes Fossálar Waterfall or inquire about local transport options that may take you closer. If no direct transport is available, follow the walking trail from the visitor center to the waterfall, which takes approximately 1 hour.
Walking
Once parked at the designated parking area for Fossálar Waterfall, follow the well-marked trail that leads you through stunning landscapes. The path is relatively easy to navigate and is about 1.5 kilometers long. As you walk, enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding mountains and lush vegetation. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring water and snacks for the journey.
