Driving
From the center of the Illinois Ozarks, take US-45 S towards Simpson. Continue on US-45 S for approximately 15 miles. As you approach Simpson, look for signs for the Sand Cave - Underground Railroad National Historic Site. Turn onto Forest Road 162, which leads directly to the site. Park in the small grassy area near the end of Sand Cave Road. There are no entrance fees.

Walking
From the parking area, follow the easily identifiable path for about a half mile to a small opening with a Natural Area sign. Continue past the opening, where the trail forks. Take the right trail around the edge of the bluff for another half mile to reach the cave's mouth. The trail is 1.2 miles round trip. Remember to bring water and wear appropriate footwear.
