The Living Lincoln Topiary Monument, located at 232 E Jackson in Macomb, Illinois, is a remarkable and innovative tribute to the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Standing 16 feet tall and 8 feet wide, this bust of 'Honest Abe' is constructed from a mix of cast stone and steel. What truly sets this monument apart is its unique topiary beard, crafted from living, flowering plants and greenery. This artistic touch makes it the only sculpture of its kind in the world. The Living Lincoln Topiary Monument was conceived by artist and Western Illinois University (WIU) professor Duke Oursler. He collaborated with artist Marc Moulton to bring the vision to life. The Macomb Area Convention & Visitors Bureau partnered with Oursler, securing funding from the Macomb Rotary Clubs to commemorate their centennial anniversary in 2020. The monument was officially dedicated on August 29th, 2020. The monument serves as the centerpiece of Macomb's 'Looking For Lincoln' Self-Guided Tour, highlighting Lincoln's deep connections to Macomb and McDonough County. Macomb was officially proclaimed an Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area on June 10th, 2021. The City Hall lawn, where the monument is located, also features historical photographs related to Lincoln and the Civil War era.
