Delabar State Park: A Mississippi River Haven

Delabar State Park, a tranquil 89-acre retreat in Henderson County, Illinois, is located about 1.5 miles north of Oquawka, along the Mississippi River. The park was established in 1960, thanks to a land donation by brothers Roy and Jack Delabar in 1959.The park's landscape is characterized by sturdy oaks, birch, and hickory trees, providing a natural habitat for various wildlife species. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting over 50 species of birds, while others may encounter squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, deer, and groundhogs.Delabar State Park offers a range of recreational activities. Anglers can enjoy river fishing, with a boat ramp and two docks providing easy access to the Mississippi. Gladstone Lake, located nearby in the Henderson County Conservation Area, offers additional lake fishing opportunities. Boating is popular, and motors of any size are allowed on the river.For those who prefer land-based activities, the park features two marked hiking trails that wind through the woodland, offering opportunities for nature walks and wildlife observation. Picnicking is also a favorite pastime, with three picnic areas equipped with tables and camp stoves. A central picnic area includes a shelter, drinking water, toilets, and a playground.Camping enthusiasts can take advantage of the park's tent and trailer campsites, which include electrical hook-ups, drinking water, and a sanitary station. Winter brings opportunities for ice fishing and ice skating on the Mississippi River backwaters.
