Originally, Teen Darwaja served as the grand entrance to the Royal Square, also known as Maidan Shahi, at Bhadra Fort. The gateway comprises three arches, with the central opening measuring 17 feet wide and the side arches 13 feet wide, all soaring to a height of 25 feet. The structure is adorned with intricately carved buttresses and semi-circular windows featuring mesh work. The central window showcases a depiction of the tree of life, with five palm trees entwined with snakes, which also serves as the symbol of the Gujarat Government. Over the centuries, Teen Darwaja has been witness to significant historical events. Mughal Emperor Jahangir, accompanied by his wife Noorjahan, would often visit to observe processions that commenced from this gateway and proceeded towards Jama Masjid. In 1459, the young Sultan Mahmud Begada, with a small contingent of horsemen, bravely marched through Teen Darwaja to quell a rebellion. In 1812, a Maratha governor, Chimnaji Raghunath, inscribed an order on Teen Darwaja declaring equal rights for women in the inheritance of ancestral property. Today, Teen Darwaja is a bustling hub surrounded by vibrant markets offering traditional handicrafts, spices, and textiles. Despite the congestion, the monument remains an architectural marvel and a must-see destination for tourists. A lamp in one of the niches has been kept burning for over 600 years by a Muslim family, honoring a legend associated with the goddess Laxmi.
