Discover more about Badshah's Hajira Ahmedabad

Badshah's Hajira, meaning King's Mausoleum, is a historical complex located in the heart of Ahmedabad's old city, near Manek Chowk and Jama Masjid. It contains the tombs of Sultan Ahmed Shah I (who ruled from 1411-1442 CE), the founder of Ahmedabad, as well as his son Muhammad Shah II and grandson Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II. Constructed in the 15th century, around the same time as Rani no Hajiro (the Queen's Mausoleum), the complex showcases the architecture of the Gujarat Sultanate. The main structure, built on a raised platform, features a central domed chamber and smaller domed chambers at each corner. Yellow sandstone was used in its construction. Intricately carved jalis (stone screens) with floral and geometric Islamic motifs adorn the façade. In addition to the tombs, the complex includes a mosque and a naubatkhana (drum room) above the entrance. The naubat tradition, a traditional orchestra that announced the arrival and departure of the king, is still maintained, with musicians playing nagara and shehnai daily. While women are not allowed to enter the main hall, men are required to cover their heads before entering. The site serves as a reminder of Ahmedabad's historical past and the reign of Sultan Ahmed Shah I.
