Discover more about Shri Kadu Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

Nestled in the vibrant Malleshwaram neighborhood of Bengaluru, the Shri Kadu Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple stands as a testament to the city's rich cultural and religious heritage. This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is believed to be over 600 years old, with its origins tracing back to the 17th century. The term 'Kadu' translates to 'forest' in Kannada, reflecting the lush greenery that once enveloped the area. Legend has it that the temple's history began in the 15th century when a betel-nut merchant, Sri Siddalinga Shetty, discovered a 'Shivalingam' while camping in the forest. He experienced a miracle when he tried to use the Linga as a stovetop, leading him to construct a temple around it. Another account attributes the temple's construction to Venkoji, the stepbrother of the Maratha King Shivaji, in 1669. Venkoji is said to have found a 'Shivalingam' and consecrated the temple around it. The temple's Dravidian architectural style showcases intricate carvings and a serene ambiance, providing a spiritual haven for devotees and visitors alike. The temple complex also houses the Nandishwara Teertha Temple, diagonally opposite the Kadu Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. This temple features a Nandi idol from whose mouth a continuous stream of water flows onto a Shiva Linga, eventually flowing into a water tank. The temple is a hub of activity during festivals like Mahashivratri, Navaratri and Kadalekai Parishe (Groundnuts fair). Devotees throng the temple to offer prayers and participate in the various religious rituals.
