Khandagiri Top Peak: Ancient Jain Caves

Khandagiri Top Peak is part of the ancient Udayagiri and Khandagiri cave complex near Bhubaneswar, Odisha. These caves, dating back to the 2nd century BCE, were carved during the reign of King Kharavela of the Mahameghavahana dynasty. The caves served as residential retreats for Jain monks, reflecting the importance of Jainism in the history of Odisha. Khandagiri, meaning 'Broken Hill,' features 15 caves, while Udayagiri, 'Sunrise Hill,' houses 18. The caves are adorned with intricate carvings, sculptures, and inscriptions that depict scenes from Jain mythology, royal processions, and daily life. Among the notable caves are Ananta Gumpha and Navamuni Gumpha, known for their Jain icons and ornamental carvings. The Hathigumpha inscription in Udayagiri provides valuable insights into King Kharavela's life and his patronage of Jainism. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the Udayagiri caves, while Khandagiri's are not under its purview. Visitors can explore the rock-cut architecture and experience the serene atmosphere that once sheltered Jain ascetics. The Digamber Jain Temple, located at the top of Khandagiri, is a more recent addition but preserves the hill's religious significance. Climbing the rocky steps to the caves offers panoramic views of Bhubaneswar.
