Chennai Snake Park: A Reptilian Realm

Chennai Snake Park, officially the Chennai Snake Park Trust, is a not-for-profit NGO and India's first reptile park. Founded in 1972 by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker, it aims to create public awareness and appreciation for reptiles and amphibians. Located in the Guindy National Park campus, next to the Children's Park, the park spans one acre and attracts over five lakh visitors annually. The park houses a wide range of reptiles, including 20 species of Indian snakes such as cobras, pythons, and vipers, as well as crocodiles, turtles, and lizards. The park also displays exotic reptiles like iguanas and albino pythons. The snakes are housed in glass-fronted enclosures, while crocodiles and larger lizards reside in open-air enclosures. Visitors can explore a museum with preserved specimens of reptiles and amphibians and a library with literature on reptilian biology. The park also features a Digital Infotainment Center with screens displaying information in English and Tamil. Demonstrations of venom extraction are occasionally held, highlighting the importance of snakes in medical research. The Chennai Snake Park plays a crucial role in reptile conservation, supporting captive breeding programs for endangered species and publishing scientific journals.
