Discover more about Himalayan Tibet Museum

The Himalayan Tibet Museum, inaugurated on July 2, 2015, by Gurung Tulku Nima Hoiser Rinpoche, stands as a cultural beacon in Darjeeling. Established to coincide with the Dalai Lama's 80th birthday, the museum primarily focuses on Tibetan history and culture, distinguishing itself from other Tibetan museums that often emphasize religious aspects. The museum's origins are rooted in a desire to present an accurate portrayal of Tibetan history, countering what its founders saw as misrepresentations in Chinese-occupied Tibet. Ngawang Tenzin Gyatso, the president of Manjushree Centre, conceived the idea after visiting the National Museum in Lhasa and observing the manipulated history presented there. The museum is located on Gandhi Road, within walking distance of the town center. It houses a rich collection of artifacts, including traditional clothing, religious sculptures, and historical photographs. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring intricate thangka paintings, a 3D map of Tibet, and a sand mandala. The Dalai Lama himself has contributed to the museum's collection, donating items such as a Buddha statue and a diamond sutra text written in gold ink. A striking display is the large 3-dimensional structure on the floor depicting the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. The museum also features a replica of the Potala Palace. The Himalayan Tibet Museum is a unit of the Manjushree Centre of Tibetan Culture, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Tibetan history, heritage and language. The museum is located on the ground floor of the Manjushree Centre, while the organization also runs a budget hotel upstairs called Tibet Home.
