Getting there

Walking

From Darjeeling Chowk Bazaar, walk towards West Point. The walk is approximately 2 km and will take around 30-40 minutes. Follow the road uphill, enjoying the scenic views. Once at West Point, a short uphill walk leads to the Peace Pagoda. There are no entry fees.

Public Transport

From the Darjeeling bus stand or railway station, take a local taxi or shared jeep towards West Point. The taxi ride will take approximately 10-15 minutes. Inform the driver to drop you off near the Peace Pagoda. From the drop-off point, it is a short walk uphill to the pagoda. Taxi fare should be around INR 150-200. There are no entry fees.

Overview

The Peace Pagoda in Darjeeling is a beacon of tranquility and a symbol of world peace. Conceived by Nichidatsu Fujii, a Japanese Buddhist monk inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, it's part of a global network of pagodas promoting non-violence. The foundation stone was laid in 1972, and the pagoda was inaugurated in 1992.The pagoda stands 28.5 meters tall and 23 meters in diameter, showcasing traditional Japanese architecture. It houses four gold-polished statues of Buddha, representing different stages of his life. Sandstone carvings depict stories from Buddha's life, adding to the site's spiritual and artistic significance. The adjacent Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple, built in traditional Japanese style, enhances the serene atmosphere.Visitors can experience daily prayers and soak in the panoramic views of the Himalayas. The pagoda is open to all faiths, inviting everyone to find peace and harmony. The site encourages meditation and reflection, offering a respite from the bustling town.
