Discover more about Shri Mahakal Temple, Darjeeling

Shri Mahakal Temple, a significant religious site for both Hindus and Buddhists, stands on Observatory Hill in Darjeeling. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is known locally as the “Holy Hill”. This hilltop is considered the place where civilization in Darjeeling began. The temple's history is intertwined with the town's name. Before the temple, Lama Dorje Rinzing built a Buddhist monastery called 'Dorje-Ling' in 1765. Some believe Darjeeling's name originated from this monastery. Legend says that in 1782, three Shiva Lingas representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar (Shiva) manifested on the hill. The Gorkha invasion in 1815 led to the monastery's destruction, after which it was moved and renamed Bhutia Busty Monastery. The temple embodies a blend of Hindu and Buddhist architectural styles. Inside, you'll find Shiva-lingas alongside idols of Buddha, with a Hindu priest and a Buddhist monk sharing a common altar. The entrance features Nandi's statue, Hindu bells, and Buddhist prayer flags. Besides the main shrine, smaller temples dedicated to Kali, Durga, Ganesh, and Hanuman are also present. A sacred cave is also worshipped. Visiting the temple provides a refreshing experience with panoramic views of Darjeeling and the surrounding mountains. The sound of temple bells and fluttering prayer flags create a serene atmosphere.
