History of Lakshadweep

The earliest settlers in Lakshadweep are believed to have arrived around the 4th century BCE. Archaeological evidence suggests that the islands were inhabited by communities engaged in fishing and coconut cultivation. The islands were known to ancient mariners and were often mentioned in historical texts for their strategic location in the Arabian Sea.
Between the 7th and 10th centuries, Lakshadweep experienced significant cultural influences from mainland India, particularly from the Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Remnants of Buddhist stupas and Hindu temples have been discovered on some of the islands, indicating a period of religious and cultural diversification.
Lakshadweep's strategic location made it a key stopover for Arab traders during the medieval period. Around the 7th century, Islam began to spread through the islands, brought by Arab merchants. Following India's independence in 1947, Lakshadweep was integrated into the Indian Union.
