Getting There

    If you are driving to the Heron Rookery, start from the main entrance of Indiana Dunes National Park located at 1215 North Indiana 49, Porter, IN 46304. From there, take IN-49 South for about 6 miles. At the intersection with US-20, turn left onto US-20 East. Continue for approximately 1 mile, then turn right onto County Rd 600 E. Follow this road for about 1 mile, and you will see the Heron Rookery on your left at 1336 600 E, Michigan City, IN 46360. There is no entrance fee specifically for the rookery, but ensure that your vehicle has a valid National Park pass if you plan to park in the main areas of the park.

    To reach the Heron Rookery using public transportation, take the South Shore Line train from Chicago to the Michigan City station. Once you arrive at the Michigan City station, you can use a local taxi or rideshare service to get to the Heron Rookery. The taxi ride should take about 15-20 minutes, covering approximately 8 miles.
