Getting There

• Walking

  Start at the Dubuque Museum of Art located at 701 Locust St, Dubuque, IA 52001. Exit the museum and head south on Locust St toward 7th St. Continue straight for about 0.3 miles until you reach the intersection with 14th St. Turn left onto 14th St and continue walking for about 0.5 miles until you reach the intersection with Jackson St. Turn right onto Jackson St and follow it for about 0.6 miles, where it becomes Mines of Spain Rd. Continue along Mines of Spain Rd for approximately 2 miles. You will see signs for the Mines of Spain Recreation Area. The Horseshoe Bluff Lookout is located approximately 0.5 miles inside the recreation area.

• Biking

  For a more scenic route, rent a bike from a local shop in downtown Dubuque. Start at the Bike Dubuque shop located at 1800 Central Ave. Head south on Central Ave, then take a right onto 16th St. Continue until you reach the intersection with Jackson St and turn left. Follow Jackson St for about 0.6 miles, which will turn into Mines of Spain Rd. Bike along Mines of Spain Rd for about 2 miles, keeping an eye out for signs directing you to the Mines of Spain Recreation Area. The Horseshoe Bluff Lookout is about 0.5 miles into the park.

• Public Transport & Walking

  Take the local bus service from downtown Dubuque. Board the 4A bus at the stop near the Grand River Center. Ride the bus towards the Mines of Spain stop, which will take approximately 20 minutes. Once you disembark at the Mines of Spain stop, head south along Mines of Spain Rd for about 0.5 miles until you enter the Mines of Spain Recreation Area. Follow the marked trails to reach the Horseshoe Bluff Lookout, which is about 0.5 miles from the entrance.
