Discover more about Abbe Creek School Museum

The Abbe Creek School Museum, nestled near Mt. Vernon, Iowa, provides a captivating glimpse into the past, showcasing education in a 19th-century one-room schoolhouse. Believed to be the oldest standing one-room brick school in Iowa, the museum is located on land claimed by William Abbe, the first white settler in Linn County. The schoolhouse was constructed in 1856, replacing an earlier log structure built in 1844. The present building was built using soft bricks made at the local Port Stottler brickyard. Originally facing north, the school was moved to face east in 1925 when the Lincoln Highway was paved. The school served the community for 92 years before closing its doors in 1936. In 1963, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Pitlik purchased the schoolhouse and yard, and in 1964, it was dedicated as a museum. Today, the Linn County Conservation Board operates the museum, which is open to the public during the summer months. Visitors can explore the meticulously preserved classroom, complete with old-fashioned desks, a blackboard, and a school bell. The museum also features exhibits of vintage school supplies, textbooks, and personal items donated by area residents. A Lincoln Highway marker still stands on the grounds, along with a marker honoring William Abbe.
