The Jones County Freedom Rock stands as a powerful tribute to the men and women who have served the United States. Located in the small community of Stone City, Iowa, this massive boulder has been transformed into a work of art by Iowa artist Ray 'Bubba' Sorensen II as part of the Iowa Freedom Rock Tour. Each face of the rock tells a story, with meticulously painted images honoring veterans from every major US conflict, a unique distinction for Jones County. One side of the rock features eleven members of the military with Jones County connections, representing conflicts from the Revolutionary War to Operation Enduring Freedom. Another side showcases artist Grant Wood, a WWI veteran, alongside Military Highway 1, also known as Dillon's Furrow, the first federally funded highway west of the Mississippi River. The rock also poignantly depicts a folded flag with a prisoner of war reaching to escape barbed wire, symbolizing POWs and MIAs. Visiting the Jones County Freedom Rock offers a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made by veterans and learn about local history. The Freedom Rock is near the General Store in Stone City.
