Discover more about Blank Park Zoo

Blank Park Zoo, located in the heart of Des Moines, Iowa, has been a beloved community institution since its opening on May 8, 1966, as the Des Moines Children's Zoo. Thanks to a generous donation by Abraham Harry Blank, the zoo was established on land near the historic Fort Des Moines. Originally designed with a nursery rhyme theme, featuring a castle, petting zoo, and miniature train, it has evolved into a modern zoological park focused on conservation and education. Today, Blank Park Zoo spans 49 acres and is home to a diverse collection of animals from around the world. Visitors can explore recreated habitats representing tropical rainforests, the Australian Outback, and the African savanna. The zoo features a variety of exhibits, including the Myron & Jackie Blank Discovery Center, which houses a 15,000-gallon saltwater aquarium. Other highlights include the Tom and Jo Ghrist Great Cats exhibit and the Kids' Kingdom, a large playground with interactive animal encounters. Blank Park Zoo is committed to conservation, education, research, and recreation. It is the only zoo in Iowa accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), ensuring high standards of animal care and welfare. The zoo offers various educational programs, tours, and special events throughout the year, including animal feedings and keeper chats. Popular seasonal events include the summer Campfire Summer Camp and the Halloween-themed Night Eyes.
