    From the Iowa State Capitol, head west on Grand Avenue. Turn left onto Robert D. Ray Drive. Continue straight; the road ends at the Botanical Garden parking lot. The walk is approximately 1 mile and should take about 20 minutes.

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, a verdant escape in the heart of Iowa's capital, has been connecting people with plants since 1979. But its roots stretch back to 1929, when community members first envisioned a botanical center. After acquiring a city greenhouse in 1939, the dream finally blossomed with the completion of the current facility. Today, the 12-acre garden offers diverse experiences. The iconic geodesic-domed conservatory, soaring 80 feet high and consisting of 665 plexiglass panels, houses over 1,000 tropical specimens. Visitors can immerse themselves in a balmy paradise, complete with a living wall that changes throughout the year. Outside the conservatory, discover 18 themed gardens interspersed with sculptures and serene water features. Stroll through the Water Garden, Rose Garden, and Conifer Garden.
