The Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation, located at the Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa, offers a captivating journey through the evolution of aviation and ground transportation. Founded in 1990, the museum showcases a diverse collection of aircraft, vehicles, and artifacts, spanning from the late 1800s to the space program. Visitors can explore military exhibits, commercial and private aviation displays, retired emergency response vehicles, and classic cars. Highlights include a 1917 Hawkeye truck made in Sioux City, a UH-1 Huey helicopter that served in Vietnam, and a P-40 Warhawk flown in World War II. The museum also features a Boeing 727-200 acquired from FedEx. A particularly poignant exhibit is dedicated to United Airlines Flight 232, which crashed in Sioux City in 1989. This exhibit displays artifacts and tells the stories of the survivors and the heroic efforts of first responders. A new memorial garden provides a space for reflection.
