The Sioux City Art Center stands as a testament to the city's commitment to the arts, providing a welcoming space for all ages and backgrounds to explore creativity. Established in 1938 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, the Art Center has a rich history of serving the community through exhibitions, education, and outreach. It is one of only four WPA art centers in Iowa that has been operating continuously. The Art Center's modern 45,000-square-foot facility, opened in 1997, features approximately 10,000 square feet of gallery space for changing exhibitions and the display of its permanent collection. The center also includes 5,000 square feet of classroom space and a 131-seat lecture hall. In 2018, the Gilchrist Learning Center opened, providing additional space for educational programs. The permanent collection includes over 8,000 pieces, with a focus on art from Siouxland and the Upper Midwest. Visitors can explore a variety of media and styles, from historical works to contemporary pieces. A highlight is Grant Wood's Corn Room, a series of murals originally designed for the Martin Hotel. The Junior League Hands On! Gallery offers interactive exhibits for children. The Art Center hosts a variety of exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing regional artists and traveling collections. The Sioux City Art Center is more than just a museum; it's a community hub that fosters creativity and appreciation for the arts. With its free admission and diverse programming, it's an accessible and enriching destination for residents and visitors alike.
