Athlone Castle, situated in the heart of Athlone on the River Shannon's west bank, has been a strategic stronghold for centuries. Originally built as a timber fort in the 12th century, it was replaced by a stone castle in 1210 for King John by Bishop John de Gray. The castle has evolved through many battles and renovations, most notably after the Siege of Athlone in 1691.The Athlone Castle Visitor Centre, reopened in 2012 after extensive renovations, offers a multi-sensory experience through eight newly designed exhibition spaces. Visitors can explore the castle's history, Athlone town, and its people through interactive displays, artifacts, and multimedia presentations. A highlight is the 360-degree audio-visual presentation that recreates the Siege of Athlone, immersing visitors in the intense battle.The exhibition also includes life-size sculptures of soldiers made from recycled materials, interactive games, and dress-up areas, making it engaging for all ages. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the River Shannon and the town from the castle walls. The castle's location is central, near other attractions like St. Peter and Paul’s Church and the Luan Gallery.
