Athlone Castle, situated in the heart of Athlone on the River Shannon's west bank, has been a strategic stronghold for centuries. Originally built as a timber fort in the 12th century, it was replaced by a stone castle in 1210 for King John by Bishop John de Gray. The castle has evolved through many battles and renovations, most notably after the Siege of Athlone in 1691.
The Athlone Castle Visitor Centre, reopened in 2012 after extensive renovations, offers a multi-sensory experience through eight newly designed exhibition spaces. Visitors can explore the castle's history, Athlone town, and its people through interactive displays, artifacts, and multimedia presentations. A highlight is the 360-degree audio-visual presentation that recreates the Siege of Athlone, immersing visitors in the intense battle.
The exhibition also includes life-size sculptures of soldiers made from recycled materials, interactive games, and dress-up areas, making it engaging for all ages. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the River Shannon and the town from the castle walls. The castle's location is central, near other attractions like St. Peter and Paul’s Church and the Luan Gallery.

Walking
From Athlone town center, Athlone Castle is a short, approximately 10-minute walk. Head east towards the River Shannon and follow the signs for the castle. The route is well-signposted and offers scenic views of the river and the town.
Public Transport
From Athlone Railway Station or Athlone Bus Station, take Bus Éireann routes A1 or A2 towards the town center. Alight at the Athlone Town Centre stop and walk for 10 minutes along Church Street and the River Shannon Walk to reach the castle. A single fare on Bus Éireann within Athlone costs approximately €2-€3.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available in Athlone. A taxi from the Athlone Railway Station or the town center to Athlone Castle will cost approximately €8 - €12. Taxi ranks are located at the train station and on Church Street.
Parking
If driving, paid parking is available at St Peter's Square and Connolly Street Car Park, both within easy walking distance of Athlone Castle. APCOA's Inish car park is another option, about a 13-minute walk away. Parking fees typically range from €1.50 to €3 per hour.
