The gallery is located on Elliott Road, opposite the castle, adjacent to the river and the Greenway bridge. The walk is short and offers scenic views of the river and the town's historic landmarks.

The Luan Gallery, opened in 2012, stands as Athlone's dedicated visual art gallery, showcasing a dynamic program of contemporary art from both Irish and international artists. Situated on the banks of the River Shannon, the gallery occupies a unique building that combines the historic Father Matthew Temperance Hall (built in 1897) with a modern extension designed by Keith Williams Architects. This blend of old and new has earned the building accolades, including the RIAI's Best Cultural Building in Ireland award in 2013 and a Civic Trust Award in 2014. The gallery's name pays homage to Luan, son of Lugair, son of Lugaid, a mythical chieftain who lends his name to the town of Athlone. Inside, visitors can explore a variety of exhibitions featuring painting, sculpture, textiles, and more. The gallery aims to support and deliver as many training programs to the local community as possible and they liaise with teachers and lecturers in the surrounding areas to organize regular school tours and visits from third level art students. With a new exhibition installed every two months, there's always something fresh and exciting to discover. Admission is free, and guided tours are available upon request, making art accessible to everyone.
