From the center of Athlone, head towards the Athlone Train Station located on Station Road. It's about a 15-minute walk (1.2 km). Once you reach the station, exit and take a left onto the R362 road. Follow the road for approximately 2 kilometers until you reach a junction. At the junction, take a right onto the R446 road. Continue straight on the R446 for around 3.5 kilometers, and you will pass by the scenic views of the River Shannon. Keep an eye out for signs pointing towards Portaneena. As you approach Portaneena, look for the Wildlife Sanctuary signs. The sanctuary entrance will be on your right.
