Discover more about Portumna Castle & Gardens

Portumna Castle, located on the edge of Portumna town in County Galway, stands as a testament to Ireland's rich history and architectural evolution. Built in the early 17th century by Richard Burke, the 4th Earl of Clanricarde, it was once the grandest residence in Ireland, showcasing a unique blend of medieval and Renaissance design. The castle's construction, completed around 1618, cost a staggering £10,000. Designed as a 'semi-fortified house,' Portumna Castle features three stories, square corner towers with gunports, and strong interior and exterior walls. This design reflects a transition from the medieval tower house to the Renaissance manor house. A large fire in 1826 destroyed the house, leading the family to reside in the stables until a new castle was constructed in 1862, which was later burned down in 1922. The last Marquis of Clanricarde sold the estate to the state in 1948. Today, visitors can explore the carefully restored ground floor, which houses exhibitions detailing the castle's history and restoration. A virtual reality presentation brings the story of the castle and the de Burgo family to life. The surrounding formal gardens, laid out geometrically, include a willow maze and a restored 17th-century walled kitchen garden, offering a glimpse into the gardening techniques of the past. The parklands and woods surrounding the castle are a wildlife sanctuary. Portumna Castle is adjacent to Lough Derg, the River Shannon, and Portumna Forest Park.
