Situated near the village of Letterfrack, this isolated peak is part of the Twelve Bens mountain range and offers commanding views of the surrounding Connemara landscape. The mountain's name, Diamond Hill, comes from the quartzite stone that glistens in the sun. The park encompasses lands that were once used for agriculture, including grazing for cattle and sheep, and as a source of fuel from the bogs. Today, the park offers several well-maintained hiking trails. The most popular route is a 7-kilometer (4.2 miles) round-trip trail that starts and ends at the National Park visitor center. The trail is well-marked, with pathways and boardwalks, making it accessible to most hikers. The route splits into the Lower Diamond Hill Walk (3 km) and the Upper Diamond Hill Walk (3.7 km), which leads to the summit. The Lower Diamond Hill walk is a 2.8km looped trail with some modest climbs, suitable for those with moderate fitness levels. The Upper Diamond Hill walk continues from the Lower Trail to the summit, offering panoramic views. From the summit, hikers can see Kylemore Abbey, the Twelve Bens, and the Atlantic coastline. Connemara National Park shares a history with Ballynahinch Castle; part of the park was once owned by Richard Martin, also known as Humanity Dick, who was a founding member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
