Discover more about Kindred Spirits: Choctaw Native American Monument

In Bailick Park, Midleton, stands Kindred Spirits, a poignant sculpture that embodies the remarkable connection between the Choctaw Nation and Ireland. This impressive monument commemorates the Choctaw people's extraordinary act of generosity in 1847, when they donated $170 to Irish famine relief during the Great Hunger. This donation is particularly significant because the Choctaw themselves were facing hardship and poverty, having recently endured the Trail of Tears, the forced displacement from their ancestral lands. The sculpture, created by artist Alex Pentek, features nine 20-foot-tall stainless steel eagle feathers arranged in a circle. No two feathers are identical, and together they form the shape of a bowl, symbolizing a gift of food and compassion. The monument was installed in 2015 and officially unveiled in June 2017, with representatives from the Choctaw Nation present. Kindred Spirits serves as a powerful reminder of the shared humanity and the enduring impact of kindness across cultures. It's a place for reflection and appreciation of the bond between the Choctaw and Irish people.
