Getting There

  • Walking

    Start at the Salthill Promenade, a popular area along the coastline. Head west towards the Claddagh area and continue walking along the coast. Once you reach the end of the promenade, you will see a path leading towards the scenic views of Galway Bay. Keep following this path as it curves along the coast. After about 1.5 miles, you will come across the village of Barna. From Barna, you can catch a local bus (Bus Eireann, Route 423) towards Spiddal. Get off at the stop near the entrance to the Black Head area.

    From Salthill, walk to the nearest bus stop on the Promenade and catch Bus Eireann Route 423 towards Spiddal. The bus will take you through scenic countryside areas. Inform the driver that you want to get off at Black Head. After getting off the bus, follow the signs to Black Head Lighthouse, which is approximately a 15-minute walk from the bus stop. The trail is well-marked, and you will enjoy beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean along the way.

    If you have access to a bike, start at Salthill Promenade and cycle west along the coast. This route offers stunning views of Galway Bay. After approximately 2 miles, you will arrive in Barna. The total distance is about 8 miles from Salthill to the lighthouse, and the cycling path is relatively flat, making it a pleasant ride.
