Discover more about Fountain of the Catechumens

Nestled in the heart of the Monti district, the Fountain of the Catechumens, also known as Fontana dei Catecumeni, graces Piazza della Madonna dei Monti with its timeless charm. This picturesque square, a vibrant hub of activity, provides a captivating glimpse into the soul of Rome. Commissioned by Pope Sixtus V as part of his urban redevelopment, the fountain was designed by Giacomo Della Porta in 1588 and brought to life by sculptor Battista Rusconi in 1589. Its name derives from the nearby College of Neophytes, or Catechumens, a 17th-century institution dedicated to training new converts to Christianity. Della Porta drew inspiration from the fountain of Santa Maria in Trastevere, though the Catechumens Fountain features a more understated design. The fountain consists of an octagonal travertine basin, resting on a four-step base. The sides are adorned with alternating coats of arms of Sixtus V and the Municipality of Rome, acknowledging the joint contribution to its creation. From the basin rises a balustrade supporting a circular basin. The water flows from the upper basin, decorated with masks and festoons and surmounted by the trimonzio (Sixtus V's coat of arms), into the lower basin, and finally pours into the octagonal pond through four lion heads. Over the centuries, the fountain has undergone several restorations. In 1680, Pope Innocent XI replaced the original upper vase with a smaller circular basin. Further restoration occurred in 1879-80 due to deterioration caused by its location in a bustling marketplace. The square underwent a complete renovation in 1997, becoming a pedestrian zone. Today, the Fountain of the Catechumens remains a beloved landmark, offering a tranquil oasis amid the vibrant energy of the Monti district.
