Discover more about Acquario di Livorno

The Livorno Aquarium, originally built in 1937 and rebuilt after World War II, stands as a testament to Livorno's resilience and connection to the sea. Dedicated to the 17th-century biologist Diacinto Cestoni, the aquarium is located in a historically and artistically significant structure on the city's waterfront. The aquarium features a diverse collection of marine life, housed in 32 tanks across a 3,000 square meter exhibition area. Visitors can explore the Mediterranean Gallery, marvel at the colors of coral reefs, and observe species from the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean Seas. A transparent tunnel offers an immersive underwater experience, while a touch pool allows for hands-on interaction with stingrays and other marine creatures. The aquarium is home to green turtles, Napoleon fish, and blacktip sharks, among other fascinating species. In addition to its marine exhibits, the Livorno Aquarium features "A New World," an exhibit dedicated to insects, amphibians, and reptiles. This section showcases creatures like chameleons, frogs, and leaf-cutter ants, highlighting the biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. The aquarium also includes a reproduction of a Roman shipwreck, blending marine biology with local history. A panoramic terrace provides stunning views of the Livorno coastline and the Tuscan Archipelago.
