Discover more about Orto Botanico di Livorno

Nestled in Livorno, Tuscany, the Orto Botanico di Livorno (Botanical Garden of Livorno) offers a serene retreat into the world of Mediterranean flora. Inaugurated in June 2000, the garden is located on the grounds of the Museo di Storia Naturale del Mediterraneo (Museum of Natural History of the Mediterranean), behind the Villa Henderson. The garden is designed to recreate the diverse environments of the Mediterranean, focusing on the province of Livorno. This includes replicating the soil types and plant life of areas such as the volcanic island of Capraia, the ophiolitic mountains of Livorno, the granite of Elba Island, the limestone of Campiglia Marittima, the sandstone of Calafuria, and the coastal dunes of Tuscany. A wetland area showcases plants typical of back-dune ponds, and a terraced olive grove represents a characteristic Mediterranean landscape. In 2003, a section dedicated to medicinal plants traditionally used in Tuscany and the Mediterranean was added. The garden also cultivates spontaneous orchids for conservation and public awareness. The Orto Botanico serves as an educational resource, offering guided tours and workshops. The garden also features a small greenhouse and a meteorological station for micro-climatic data monitoring.
