Discover more about Castello Di Monti

Perched on a hill in Monti, the Castello Di Monti is a medieval fortress with origins in the 11th century. Built by the Malaspina family, it strategically dominates the Taverone Valley, overseeing key communication routes to the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The castle's location was also near the ancient village of Venelia. Originally built for military purposes, the castle was transformed into a stately home in the 16th century by Marquis Moroello Malaspina, who added vaulted ceilings and monumental fireplaces. Severely damaged by the 1920 earthquake, the Malaspina family carefully restored it, bringing back its original splendor. Today, the castle is still owned by descendants of the original feudal lords, making it unique among regional castles. Visitors can explore the castle through guided tours, which provide insights into its history and strategic importance. The tour guides offer historical context and local stories. From the castle's terrace, panoramic views stretch across Lunigiana, from the Apennines to the Apuan Alps.
