Discover more about Archaeological Park of Vulci

The Archaeological Park of Vulci invites visitors to step back in time and explore the remains of a once-thriving Etruscan and Roman city. Located near Montalto di Castro in the province of Viterbo, the park spans approximately 120 hectares and showcases the rich history and natural beauty of the Tuscan-Lazio Maremma. Founded by the Etruscans, Vulci rose to prominence due to its strategic location and commercial connections with Greece and the East. The city flourished from the 7th to the 6th centuries BC, leaving behind a legacy of impressive architecture, intricate tombs, and artistic treasures. Later, under Roman rule, Vulci continued to prosper, leaving behind additional layers of history to uncover. Within the park, visitors can explore the remains of the ancient city, including the original city walls dating back to the 4th century BC. Discover the West Gate, Roman aqueduct remains, the foundations of an Etruscan temple (5th century BC), and the ruins of a Roman villa. A highlight of Vulci is its vast necropolis, one of the most significant Etruscan cemeteries. Wander through thousands of tombs, including the Cuccumella tumulus and the François Tomb, named after its discoverer Alessandro François. The François Tomb once held astounding frescoes that are now located in Villa Albani in Rome. The Castello dell'Abbadia, a 13th-century castle, houses the National Archaeological Museum of Vulci, displaying a collection of artifacts found within the park. Adjacent to the castle is the Ponte del Diavolo (Devil's Bridge), an Etruscan-Roman bridge offering scenic views of the Fiora River. Beyond its historical significance, Vulci offers a beautiful natural environment. The Fiora River carves through volcanic canyons, creating picturesque landscapes and the Pellicone Lake. Visitors can enjoy hiking, nature trails, and even kayaking or tubing along the river.
